    Why Bother?

Enforced captivity within my own house finally made me open my eyes to the pig sty that I was living in. The problem was that now that I finally noticed it, I was helpless to do anything about it except stare helplessly as the dust bunnies started multiplying.

So as I sat and watched the antics of the dust bunnies, I started re-evaluating my life. My priorities which I had once thought in order, were really very skewed. Or so I thought.

Now, with more and more advanced hindsight I realize that my priorities were all in the right place; it was just my will power which was lacking. I decided to give it a push-start.

The upshot of this was that even though I wasn¡Çt mobile I still managed to get the ball rolling. I like making lists so that¡Çs what I did. Not everyone can handle that, and that¡Çs alright. There are other ways to kick start your drive to survive the Clutter-bug within you.

Anyway, I made reams and reams of lists and generally added to the overall clutter with these, but it did help to pass the time away and keep my mind off my mobility issues or lack thereof.

All this explains the reasons why I bothered to finally get my home decluttered, but does that mean that you too will need to break your leg before you can come to the same conclusions that I did? Not necessarily, although it can¡Çt hurt (the introspection, not the broken leg).

Why should you bother to make the effort though? As I said in the beginning , it¡Çs tiring just to look at the entire mess, and to even think of finally cleaning it all up probably has shudders running and up and down your spine.

The problem though, is that until and unless you come to terms with who you are and what makes you tick, you will forever be shuddering at the mess you live in and trying your utmost best to avoid it.

And ultimately this type of denial will bear down on the soul and it will start to show in other aspects of your life as well.

It will begin with the little things which you¡Çll let slide. Once upon a time before you let Clutter take over your life you would have frowned upon letting these things slide, but now you find it all too easy to convince yourself that it¡Çs okay.

After the little things will come the big things. These will be more difficult to square away with yourself, but don¡Çt worry you¡Çll manage to do it nonetheless.

And after a while it just becomes easier and easier to live with the big clutter, that not only your home has become, but also your mind and your life.

So, although I normally scoff at those self-help, self-empowerment books, I will take a leaf out of their pages and tell you that first thing every morning you need to look at your bleary-eyed self in the mirror and tell yourself, that "you will succeed, and that you will survive!¡É

Cue the Gloria Gaynor song ¡ÈI will survive¡É. In actual fact I heard the song one morning on the radio and found that it invigorated me.

I even found myself dancing (as far as I cold on a pair of crutches) to the entire song. This left me more revved up to face the day than if I had had my normal shot of caffeine.

What I would therefore suggest is that you find your own Gloria Gaynor equivalent song, the one that will get your blood pumping and your body singing, and play it first thing in the morning.

I can just hear you thinking that¡Çs all well and good, but it still doesn¡Çt tell you why you should bother clearing up your clutter.

The point that I was trying to make was that if you let it, the clutter will take overtake your life, not only the one room in your house, but even your entire life. It can eat away at your life and you won¡Çt even know it.

But if you¡Çre reading this book, then it at least means that you want to grab a hold of your life before it gets pushed out the window by your clutter.

Yes, yes, but why bother? What¡Çs the point? After all it will all just get messed up again later. The point really, is different for everyone.

For me, it came down to being able to find a pen. I knew I had them by the dozen but I could never seem to lay my hands on one when I needed it so I kept buying more and more pens.

When I finally managed to go through my entire house, room by room, I found over a 150 pens stashed away wherever I had last used one, and then promptly lost them.

For yourself, it might be something as silly as never being able to find a pen, or it could be that you misplaced your pet hamster a month ago and only realized now that you can¡Çt find him!

It doesn¡Çt really matter what the point is, what matters is that there is a catalyst in your life which will make you see the point.

That¡Çs not to say that until this time you need to live with the clutter, or that you need to go to the Himalayas to meditate on the point.

It will come to you when you¡Çre ready to deal with it, and until then you can read the helpful tips at decluttering which I¡Çve placed in this book for that express purpose!
